Top tips for caring for the oral health of children with special needs!

At Beecroft Dental Centre, we can provide the specialised dental care that children with a disability require

Establishing a proper oral care program during childhood is critically important to forging a healthy and comfortable life for a child with special needs. With proper preparation you can help make your child’s first visit to the dentist a positive and productive experience, and help establish a comfortable at home oral hygiene routine

The following tips can help make your visits to the dentist run smoothly:

  1. Conduct a pre-appointment interview with your dentist to discuss your child’s condition and medical history. This allows your dentist to be properly prepared on the day of treatment. Where appropriate, you may also need to schedule a meeting between your dentist and your child’s regular GP.
  2. Schedule treatments at the time of day when your child is generally most co-operative. It also helps to have all forms completed before you arrive at the practice.
  3. Consistency and routine are crucial for the success of dental appointments, so try to schedule treatments with the same dental professionals in the same chair.
  4. Talk about visiting the dentist and play pretend dental practice games at home to desensitise your child to this new experience.

Forging a trusting relationship between your dentist, your child and yourself is the best way to ensure the success of in practice dental care.
